We don’t blame you – we have countless plants too! It’s a great way to liven up your space. But if you have pets, you might want to reconsider your options. Some popular house plants are toxic to animals, with effects that range from mild irritation to severe health problems!

Toxic Houseplants

We know what you’re thinking – what?! Even pothos?! Everyone has pothos!

Thankfully, there are measures you could take if you already have these plants at home.

Precautionary Measures

  • Research the plants you already have. Are they toxic, or pet-safe? Consult reliable sources such as the ASPCA for plant toxicity information.
  • Consider placing your (toxic or non-toxic) plants somewhere pets can’t reach, minimizing contact. It’s a win-win situation: no ruined plants for you, and no upset tummy for your pet!
  • Monitor your pets around plants. Are they too curious? Perhaps a distraction could help – a toy that looks like a plant or a chicken-shaped squeaky toy; whatever works.

Non-toxic Houseplants

In addition to taking precautions, pet owners also do well to consider non-toxic alternatives for their houseplants. There are many beautiful and safe plants to choose from that will not harm your pets.

  • Spider Plant: This hardy plant is safe for both cats and dogs. It’s also known for its ability to thrive in various light conditions.
  • Boston Fern: Also called Sword Fern, this plant is non-toxic and can be a lush addition to any home, though it requires humidity,
  • African Violet: A popular flowering houseplant that is safe for pets and thrives in moderate light and humidity.
  • Peperomia: These easy-to-care-for plants come in various textures and colors, making them a delightful choice that is non-toxic to pets.
  • Orchids (Phalaenopsis): Many varieties of orchids are safe for pets and add a touch of elegance to home décor.

Conclusion

Some houseplants are toxic to our pets – but that doesn’t mean we need to throw them all out the window! There are steps we can take to ensure our pet’s health and safety. By being aware of toxic and non-toxic plants, pet owners can create a beautiful and safe indoor environment for their furry companions. More power to hoolamans!

Kyoto

Special Needs Cat

Kyoto is a living miracle, and such an inspiration to us. She got infected with Panleukopenia as a little kitten, and the vet who saw her suggested euthanasia. We knew that kittens had a very low survival rate, but we couldn’t bring ourselves to do it. We took her home to continue treatment and hoped for the best instead.

For the next 1-2 months, we watched her fight with her remaining strength to finish her Recovery food and swallow her bitter meds. She endured daily subcutaneous injections to keep hydrated. She beat the odds.

Now an adult cat, she is prone to respiratory issues as a result of her long term illness. She is skinny and frail looking. The likelihood that she will get adopted is very low, so she we have officially made her a permanent resident of BFFS.

She loves life, food, and unlimited petting sessions, and we vow to give everything she needs for a comfortable retirement.

Become Kyoto's BFF

All that Kyoto needs is a comfortable home and a steady supply of head scritches. Of course, she would also appreciate wet canned food to keep her appetite strong, as well as supplements to boost her immune system. Can you be her BFF?

Kyoto's Wishlist

  • Cat kibble
  • Wet cat food
  • LC-Vit
  • Scratch boards
  • Cat bed

When you become Kyoto's BFF, you will receive monthly newsletters with updates on her well-being. You may also request for a 5-minute Zoom call so you can see how she's doing.

Rescue Story

Kyoto was rescued as a kitten with several other littermates. We volunteered to foster them for the Philippine Animal Welfare Society until they are ready for adoption. All of her siblings have been readmitted to the shelter, but Kyoto was left behind because she didn’t have the best health. Despite our best efforts, she now lives with the long-term effects of her illness and is unlikely to get adopted at the shelter.

Malvi

Special Needs Cat

Malvi is a shy but very sweet cat who was a long-time resident of the PAWS Cattery annex before she had to be isolated in the Sick Bay for eosinophilic granuloma complex, or EGC, an inflammatory skin problem that often affects immunocompromised cats.

Like most orphaned kittens, Malvi may have gone through prolonged periods of hunger, resulting in the malnutrition that made her vulnerable to illnesses like EGC. In her case, the itchiness of her EGC affected her upper lip, which she licked and scratched until the skin wore away. This explains why Malvi’s upper muzzle looks a little thin.

Furthermore, Malvi’s EGC was only exacerbated by the stress of being in a crowded cattery, where she was also easily intimidated by the healthier and rowdier cats. As a result, Malvi also lost weight as her EGC progressed. While isolation in the Sick Bay may have helped her regain weight and stopped the inflammation in her muzzle, it would ultimately be better for her to retire at our sanctuary, where she could have the space and attention she direly needed.

This shy girl is not demanding at all. She just wants some peace and quiet, and a ready supply of head scratches when she comes out of hiding . She doesn’t mind perching on a high spot away from her rowdy siblings, but she prefers soft beds, tunnels, and hidey houses where she can nap in peace.

Malvi's Wishlist

Rescue Story

Malvi was found as a tiny, flea-infested kitten at Manhattan Parkview, a condominium complex in Quezon City. To add to her complications, Malvi also had an umbilical hernia at the time of her rescue that needed urgent surgery.

Kiko

Senior Cat

Despite his dashing good looks, it was always difficult for Kiko to warm up to both hoomans and cats alike. While we cannot understand how such a handsome boy would lack confidence, Kiko still deserves empathy and understanding. After all, even animals have psychosocial problems.

Kiko had already undergone a trial adoption through the shelter. Unfortunately, this did not work out due to persistent allergies of his former hoomans. Rather than allow Kiko to return to the shelter — where he had already undergone so much difficulty finding an adopter, and where his cattery-mates had already gone to their furever homes — we decided to give Kiko a shot at furever here at BFFS.

Artemis

Special Needs Dog

The first thing anyone would notice about Artemis is her odd-looking face (it’s okay — she won’t get offended!) You see, she survived the deadly distemper virus. Most dogs who do tend to develop long-term side effects to the nervous system, which manifest as jaw spasms and twitching. These involuntary movements affect the facial muscles.

Artemis’ condition will no longer improve. She will be prone to other ailments and time will come when her body will be under too much discomfort. But she is still relatively healthy so we hope that the progression will be slow.

Until then, we love seeing her being carefree, affectionate, and oftentimes silly, the way dogs are meant to be.

Artemis loves food! That’s good news because she needs to strengthen her body to fight off secondary diseases caused by her history of distemper. A steady supply of supplements will also help. Of course, it wouldn’t hurt to have an abundance of treats to keep her happy. Would you help us spoil Artemis?

Maria Lourdes P. Pobre has made a contribution on your behalf to provide Viserion support for his daily needs. With this, you automatically become Viserion’s BFF for 1 month beginning January 1, 2023.

Viserion's Story

Viserion was rescued by The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). He has come to retire at our sanctuary for senior and special needs animals.

Someone left Viserion tied to a post between Lido and Yellow Cab on Visayas Ave. QC. He managed to cut himself loose and hid under parked cars. When rescuers arrived, he willingly entered the crate, as if just waiting for a ride to the shelter!

Viserion didn’t use to be a tripod. He was seen along Visayas Ave. in Quezon City, dragging his bleeding hind legs. His injuries turned out to be either inborn or caused by past trauma, and not a recent hit and run incident.

The vet amputated his left hind leg because it had severely atrophied and hindered his ability to strengthen his right hind leg. After some therapy, his remaining leg has started to regain some function.

Viserion is also incontinent and prone to urine scalding. Because of this, a mass formed on his genitals and it had to amputated as well. A “sex change” was effectively performed, and that area has to be washed and protected with petroleum jelly at least 2x a day.

Despite all his hardships, he remains one of our most affectionate and playful canine resident. There’s no stopping him, with or without his wheelchair.

Furry Christmas, Lourdes!

You have been gifted with a BFF!

Maria Lourdes P. Pobre has made a contribution on your behalf to provide Slinky support for his daily needs. With this, you automatically become Slinky’s BFF for 1 month beginning January 1, 2023.

Slinky's Story

Slinky was rescued by The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). He has come to retire at our sanctuary for senior and special needs animals.

Actors Carla Abellana and Tom Rodriguez rescued Slinky as a small kitten. When he was checked, the vet discovered that he suffered from Cerebellar Hypoplasia and needed to be in the care of someone who can give him special attention. And that’s how he came to be transferred from the PAWS shelter to BFFS.

Cerebellar Hypoplasia, also known as the wobbly cat syndrome, is a neurological disorder that causes sudden jerky movements, uncoordinated motion and loss of balance.

Because of the severerity of his condition, he needs assistance when eating and especially when drinking. This is so he doesn’t inhale water or accidentally drown in his bowl. He also needs close supervision when let out of his padded pen to make sure that he doesn’t injure himself.

Despite his condition, he is a very sweet cat who loves to explore and play with shiny things. We are hoping to give him the best quality of life that we can manage here at the sanctuary.

Maria Lourdes P. Pobre has made a contribution on your behalf to provide Habagat support for his daily needs. With this, you automatically become Habagat’s BFF for 1 month beginning January 1, 2023.

Habagat's Story

Habagat was rescued by The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). He has come to retire at our sanctuary for senior and special needs animals.

Habagat’s previous owner had been dead for several days before the neighbors noticed a smell coming from the house. They realized that a dog that was left alone and starving, so after the owner’s remains were retrieved, PAWS rescuers came to the site to get Habagat and admit him to the shelter.

Growing old without getting socialized caused him to be deeply mistrustful of humans. Because of that, he spent more than 2 years in quarantine at the PAWS shelter, never graduating to the dog run or becoming eligible for adoption. While he was capable of showing and receiving affection to a VERY select few, he was unpredictable and can be aggressive if mishandled.

Although we are not qualified dog trainers or behavior experts, we believed that Habagat can live out the rest of his days in a sanctuary setting where he has more freedom and more opportunities to interact with humans. True enough, he has shown remarkable progress since he came to live us more than a month ago. He’s turning out to be quite a sweet boy!

You have been gifted with a BFF!

Dr. Cherry Gotamco has made a contribution on your behalf to provide Skater support for his daily needs. With this, you automatically become Skater’s BFF for 1 month beginning January 1, 2023.

Skater's Story

Skater was rescued by The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). He has come to retire at our sanctuary for senior and special needs animals.

Skater was found inside a box on the side of the road, terrified and confused. You could see the relief on his face when he was rescued!

With all his legs deformed, we didn’t think he could walk at all. He was clearly another product of breeding gone wrong, and when his owner realized he was never going to bring them any profit, they decided to discard him like garbage 🙁

We decided to foster him right away. We named him Skater because we planned to build a skateboard-type of device so he could walk around. However, we discovered that he didn’t need one at all — at least, not yet.

Because he’s different, he is prone to sores on his limbs and it takes a lot of effort for him to climb even small steps. He may need an assistive device when he gets older, but for now he’s just grateful to be out of that awful box and enjoying farm life with his furry siblings.
